UTeach Dance

UTeach Dance integrates advanced pedagogy in dance, leading to teacher certification with the professional artistic training and performance opportunities of the B.F.A. in Dance.

Students train in daily technique classes in ballet and contemporary dance forms, while also enjoying a curriculum that consists of practical and theoretical studies in performance, choreography and related dance studies. Students perform and participate regularly in the department’s award-winning dance company, Dance Repertory Theatre.

Students interested in pursuing UTeach Dance must apply to the B.F.A. in Dance through ApplyTexas. During the program of study, dancers can elect to pursue the UTeach Dance component of the B.F.A. in Dance degree, which may lead to Texas teaching certification.

The professional development sequence leading to Texas state teacher certification for grades 8-12 is a total of twenty-four (24) semester hours and includes a semester of observation and a semester of practicum (student teaching). Our dance certification program is grounded in the best practices in teaching dance that facilitate learning movement, dance-making and literacy as well as history and legacy. Students interested in UTeach Dance are invited to apply to the certification program during their second year of study at the university.

The University of Texas at Austin is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).
