Overview
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance offers intensive, professional training within a rigorous academic setting. Students pursing a B.F.A. in Dance can choose between two distinct concentrations:
- Performance and Choreography
- Dance Education, which leads to Texas state teacher certification for grades 6-12, with reciprocity in many states
B.F.A. in Dance students pursuing either concentration will train in contemporary, ballet, African and street dance forms, with numerous opportunities for performance and choreography. Both emphases also provide training in pedagogy, conditioning, anatomy, dance history and production and performance with the department’s award-winning student dance company, Dance Repertory Theatre.
The University of Texas at Austin is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

Video 1 - Movement Samples & Creative Challenge: Video 1 should be comprised of the three movement samples and a creative dancemaking challenge. All directives for the prompts will be outlined in the provided Pre-screen Audition Instructional Video. Title your video, “Movement Samples & Creative Challenge."
For the choreographed movement sections, please use the music provided in the Audition Resources Folder and be sure that the music can be heard in your video recording.
Be sure to edit your samples into one video file in the following order:- Contemporary
- Ballet
- Afro-Contemporary Forms
- Creative Challenge
For the creative challenge, the focus should be to solve the five-part movement problem outlined in the video with your unique voice and creative ideas, while adhering to the time limit (one minute or less).
- Video 2 – Personal Reflection video: Create a self-interview video that responds to the following prompts and is no more than one minute long. You may write your answers and read your response to us or respond more conversationally, without writing down your answers first. What’s most important is that you think about the question and provide a thoughtful response. We are not evaluating your oral presentation skills!
- This audition process probably challenged you in one way or another. What was one challenge and how did you use what you know to respond to this challenge? Your challenge should be unrelated to the actual filming of the video or to performing an unfamiliar movement technique.
- Share one discovery you made throughout the process of completing these materials and why it matters to you.
Callback auditions will take place January-February
Selected applicants will be invited to a callback audition or interview during which you’ll showcase your skills and engage with our faculty. If invited, our faculty strongly encourage attendance to the in-person callback days.
