Alumna Amber Whatley on Creating the Lighting Workshop, Blackout

Driven to provide a space for young artists of color to get experience working with lighting design and technology, alumna Amber Whatley (M.F.A. 2021) created Blackout, a free two-week workshop series in lighting design and technology aimed at Black youth and communities with limited access to education in theatrical arts.

Emma Craig Receives Barbara Matera Award for Costume Making

Graduate student Emma Craig was selected for USITT's 2022 Barbara Matera Award for Costume Making, recognizing her outstanding work in the field of costuming. Craig is the third M.F.A. candidate from the Department of Theatre and Dance to receive this award in the past four years.

Alum Danny Tejera's Play Selected for New Voices Reading Series

Playwriting alumnus Danny Tejera's play Toros, which was previously workshopped as part of UTNT (UT New Theatre) (2020), was selected to be featured in Second Stage Theater's Judith Champion New Voices Reading Series. Toros will be presented at the Tony Kiser Theater on January 18, 2022.

Jasmine Games Wins 2021 Sexton Prize for Poetry

M.F.A. candidate Jasmine Games has received the prestigious Sexton Prize for Poetry for her book Somebody's Daughter, earning her publication and distribution through The Black Spring Press Group along with a monetary prize. 

Danny Tejera's play "TOROS" part of the 2022 Judith Champion New Voices Series at Second Stage

The series begins January 18 with Toros by Tejera (M.F.A., Playwriting, 2020), directed by David Mendizábal. Toros follows three international late-20-year-olds (and one dying golden retriever) as they hang out and more in a garage in Madrid as they try to sort out their lives.
