Alum Joins Panel Discussion on Theatre, Race and Ethnicity

Andrew G. Rodriguez (B.F.A. 2019) joins three other Latinx artists in a panel discussion about art, life and the complexities of both race and ethnicity within the Latinx community. Their conversation, hosted by New York Theatre Workshop, will be streamed on February 24, 2021.

Annie Ulrich Receives the Barbara Matera Award for Costume Making

Third-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate Annie Ulrich has received the 2021 Barbara Matera Award for Costume Making. This award, selected by USITT from a pool of applicants across the nation, recognizes Ulrich's outstanding artistic and technical skills as a costume maker.

UT Theatre and Dance alumnus Dr. Ramón H. Rivera-Servera (Ph.D. 2003) will return to the 40-acres as the next dean of the College of Fine Arts, bringing with him a passion for advancing transformational change in the arts. His appointment will begin on July 1, 2021.

Karen Maness Curates Upcoming Hollywood Backdrop Exhibition

Faculty member Karen Maness has curated a collection of 12 of the 50 historic Hollywood backdrops that are currently stored at Texas Performing Arts, showcasing a portion of what Maness notes to be "the largest educational collection of Hollywood Motion Picture backdrops in the world." The exhibit will be open to the public from February 11 to March 21, 2021.

UT Austin Associate Professor of Dance Gesel Mason Awarded NEH Grant For Digital Archiving Project to Document Work of Black Choreographers

In December, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded just under $100,000 for a project spearheaded by University of Texas at Austin Associate Professor of Dance Gesel Mason to support her ongoing project to archive the work of Black choreographers.

Score for 7 Solos Incorporates Students' Improvisational Movements

The Department of Art and Art History's Visual Arts Center will feature an exhibit by Madeline Hollander that, through a collaboration with faculty member Erica Gionfriddo, will incorporate improvisational responses by a group of dance students. The exhibit, available from January 30-March 27, 2021, utilizes a selection of retired fire hoses as reminders of the environmental catastrophes we have witnessed.

Alum Michael J. Love Creates Studio and Livestream Performances

Left without a studio to rehearse in, Michael J. Love (M.F.A. 2020) took matters into his own hands, purchasing and creating his own rehearsal space. He now produces monthly performances in collaborations with various multi-disciplinary artists from The BEATBOX. 

Dawn Davis Loring co-writes a Dance Appreciation textbook to be published this month

Dawn Davis Loring (B.A., Dance, 1992) co-wrote a Dance Appreciation textbook, along with Julie Pentz, to be published by Human Kinetics this month. Their book comes from an inclusive point of view, discussing differently-abled bodies, highlighting creative and geographical diversity, and it contains a thread of discussion throughout regarding the importance of social media, YouTube, and streaming services on creating, learning, and disseminating dances including a multiplicity of voices.
