American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive

The University of Texas at Austin became a site for American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive program in 2001. The summer intensive program is a four-week session, taught by faculty from American Ballet Theatre and The University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance. The program is designed for intermediate/advanced dancers age 12–18.

2019 American Ballet Theatre Texas Summer Intensive has passed. Information about the 2020 American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive including audition and program dates will be made available soon. 


Auditions for the program take place during January and February in ABT's national audition tour. Auditions are open to all male and female students who have achieved intermediate or advanced levels of ballet training. Applicants for all Summer Intensives must be at least 11 years old by their audition date. Applicants over age 18 will be considered for the New York and Collegiate Intensives only. You may check the audition information page on the ABT website for more information.

The audition on The University of Texas at Austin campus on Saturday, January 19, 2019 has passed. Audition information for the 2020 Summer Intensive will be available soon.

The UT campus audition will be held at the F. Loren Winship Drama Building, located at 300 E. 23rd Street, Austin, Texas 78712. Learn more about directions and parking for your campus visit.

Please submit the following at the audition in order to register:

  • The $40.00 audition fee in check or money order (payable to American Ballet Theatre) or cash for in-person auditions only.
  • One informal headshot. Photo should be taken with a clear background, hair in bun.
  • One photograph showing first arabesque on pointe or demi-pointe in center. Photo should be taken with a clear background, preferably in a ballet studio, in a black leotard and tights.

Photographs will not be returned.

Students are to abide by the following dress code for their audition:

  • Girls must wear full-length pink tights and black leotards with ballet slippers. Bring pointe shoes for the last 20 minutes of class.
  • Boys must wear white t-shirts, full-length black tights and ballet slippers.

Auditioning at any site will allow you to be considered for all Summer Intensive Programs and merit-based scholarships. Students may only audition once each year. Pre-registration is suggested but not required.

You have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choice of the workshop locations to attend for the summer: New York, Alabama, California, Florida or Texas. All of audition and acceptance details are handled through American Ballet Theatre's New York office. Notification letters will be emailed within 10 business days following each audition. 


The ABT Summer Intensive curriculum includes both upper-level technique classes and lecture courses on subjects critical to the development of a well-rounded dancer. Classes include ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux, variations, men's class, modern, jazz, musical theatre, character, choreography, meet the artist, pilates, yoga, injury prevention, dance history, music, nutrition and acting for dance/mime. 

2019 Tuition and Fees

ABT Intensive tuition must be postmarked by May 1, 2019. All registration forms and UT Austin payments must be postmarked by May 15, 2019. 

Residential Students

Room and board payment includes all meals during the student's stay. 

Day Students

*Day Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a Day Student Meal Card. The University of Texas at Austin cafeteria will not allow students to enter the dining hall without a meal card. If students prefer to provide their own meals, they will be required to eat lunch in an area designated for Day Students only. If your child has food allergies and/or dietary restrictions, please contact us to discuss arrangements with our dietitians.

Residential Students will reside in a university dormitory alongside UT/ABT staff. All meals are provided during a residential student's stay and down-time is filled with leisure activities such as swimming, karaoke and bowling. 

Day Students must be escorted to and from the Intensive daily for check-in and check-out. These check-in and check-out times are at approximately 8:00-8:30 a.m. and 5:00-5:30 p.m. for weekdays and 9:00-9:30 a.m. and 2:45-3:15 p.m. on Saturdays. Day Students are not permitted to attend Sunday activities, but may request an activity pass to join Friday or Saturday activities. Meals are not included in the Day Student Fee. 


For 2019, there are two public performances on August 2 at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the B. Iden Payne Theatre. Dancers perform ABT's repertoire taught during the program. Tickets are $15 for adults (ages 18 through 64), $10 for seniors (age 65 or greater) and $10 for children (age 17 and younger) for each performance and may be purchased in advance or at the door. Seating is general admission.
