Her research primarily centers queer memory, histories and temporalities in theatrical performance, and her M.A. thesis engaged recent immersive art works depicting the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York. They have presented their work at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the Afterlives of Grief: Queerness, Disability and Race conferences. She has additional research interests in mediated performance, the Off-off-Broadway movement and the public dramaturgies of LGBTQ+ theatre festivals.
As a theatre artist, Beckmann has worn a variety of hats in multiple theatrical works across New York, Hartford and Lisbon, and has experience working as a dramaturg, director, writer and performing arts festival coordinator. Directly prior to beginning their graduate studies in Austin, Beckmann completed a Fulbright grant placement in Portugal which enabled her to work with the Lisbon-based Já International Theatre, acting as chief production executor for JáFEST 2023, an inaugural international theatre festival sponsored by the European Union.
