The Summer Theatre Workshop at The University of Texas at Austin invites high school theatre artists who are interested in developing and refining their skills as stage performers and technicians. Through a series of workshops, seminars, masterclasses and rehearsals led by renowned Department of Theatre and Dance faculty, participants will gain valuable skills and insight applicable to the professional production process.  Topics may include:  Voice and Diction; Physical Acting; Preparing the Audition Monologue; Foundations of Lighting; Intro to Sound Design; Costuming Basics; Prop Design and Construction; Stage Management 101; Portfolio and Resume Design; and more. Performance participants will be cast in one of two fully-staged productions. The workshop will culminate with two performances of each show.

UT Live Design and Production Showcase 2024 presents work created for theatre, dance and other performance mediums by M.F.A. candidates in the UT Live Design and Production program at The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance. Areas of work include costume design and technology, lighting design, integrated media design and scenic design. Collectively, this work helps tell visual stories for live performance and reflects the collaborative nature of the theatrical process.

The Performance as Public Practice Fridays@2 speaker series facilitates discussions about the creation and study of performance. PPP welcomes artists from within and beyond the Winship Drama Building, including current students, distinguished alumni and arts leaders from across the country, to share their research and methodology. Up next is a screening of the film Entre Puerto Rico y Richmond: Women in Resistance Shall Not Be Moved followed by a conversation with co-creator and dramaturg Dr. Patricia Herrera.

Evolution is a collaborative design laboratory facilitating interdisciplinary experimentation in dance performance. Choreographers from the Department of Theatre and Dance join with concert and event lighting designers and composers from the School of Design and Creative Technologies to create short dance works for the concert stage. This public showcase is presented in the B. Iden Payne Theatre each spring.

Have you ever wondered what it meant to be a woman who loves? Through vignettes, to love and to be loved and everything in between tells us just that. These short stories/scenes explore the joy, pain and everything in between of what it means to be a woman who loves. 

Following the 2024 Lozano Long Conference: Indigenous Lands, Resisting Sexualities in Abiayala, the Performance as Public Practice Fridays@2 community is hosting a discussion with poet, performance and visual artist Manu Tzoc Bucup about their work “Mobile Bodies: Object and Word/Language and Artifact." 

In the Summer of 2023, five teens from Austin came together to imagine a performance art festival in Austin created for teens and produced by teens. With the support of Deen Rawlins-Harris, current graduate student in the Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities program at UT Austin, this incredible team of youth producers will host a Battle of the Bands inspired celebration featuring teen bands from all over Austin and jamming to all different styles of music that showcases the diversity and creativity of Gen Z here in Austin.

A bilingual adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most cherished works, Romeo y Juliet recounts the tale of two star-crossed lovers, daughters from the feuding houses of Capulet and Montague, reimagined in Alta, California in the 1840’s prior to the annexation of California to the United States. Set in the limbo between Mexican rule and new statehood, this retelling shifts between English and Spanish, bringing new life to a well-loved tale of love, bloodshed, family and fate. 

Cavale has kidnapped Slim. Somewhere along the way, Slim has fallen deeply in love with her. Or, at the very least, he has a deep lust for her. Held captive by a .45 in a seedy motel and doped up on drugs, they converse, fight and love. As they rot away together in their equal misery and desire, they call up an illusive anthropomorphic Lobsterman to pass the time.
