After a brief illness June Moll died peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2009, at Christopher House in Austin. For several years she lived at the Summit at Northwest Hills, and then, at the Summit at Westlake Hills Healthcare Center.
She is survived by her sister Marcella Van Dalen of Oakland, California; sister-in-law Dorothy Fulmer of Toledo, Ohio; nephew William Fulmer of Hamilton, Ohio; numerous great-nephews and nieces in Ohio and California; and longtime friends Lola and Coleman Jennings and Sally Leach of Austin. Her husband, James W. Moll, predeceased her in 1986.
June was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on February 21, 1917, to Ada Anderson Madison and George Madison. After graduating from the University of Michigan, June taught high school in Bessemer on the Upper Peninsula. She married James Moll in 1942, and they made their home in Austin. She worked for the University Interscholastic League One-Act Play Competition, and for several summers she was an actress with a professional repertory company in Ann Arbor.
During World War II, she taught in the Department of Drama at The University of Texas and directed productions for the Curtain Club, an extra-curricular campus theatre organization. After the war and a few seasons at the Margo Jones Theatre in Dallas, she and Jim returned to Austin. June spent several years studying in the Classics Department before earning her Master's of Library Science from UT. She worked in the libraries of The University, eventually becoming head librarian of the Stark Rare Books Collection, and subsequently, head librarian of the library at the Humanities Research Center. She also taught in the Graduate School of Library Science while she was a librarian. She retired in 1972.
For more than three decades she was a member of the American History Club of Austin. Throughout their lives June and Jim traveled extensively in the United States and both Eastern and Western Europe.
Her friends are very grateful for the compassionate care that June received from the staffs of both Summits, Seton Hospital and Christopher House.
At her request, no services are planned. Contributions in her memory may be made to either the International Festival at Round Top, Texas, or The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance James W. Moll Endowed Scholarship.
