About Yunina C. Barbour-Payne

Yunina C. Barbour-Payne's dissertation, "Redbones, Blackbones and Other Bones to Pick, Formation of Affrilachian Aesthetics," examines a vast range of cultural productions created by Black women. Comprising three case studies of Black women performance artists with origins in Appalachia, she situated the work from this region within Black feminist, Black literary and Black performance cannons. Barbour-Payne explores connections between environmental, racial and gender justice advocacy in the works of Affrilachian artists Martha Redbone, Lyn Ford and Nerissa Milton Long. Her project incorporates performance as research as an Affrilachian theatre maker working with diverse populations outside the region.

About Shannon Woods

Shannon Woods is a dance artist and fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in Theatre with a specialization in performance as public practice. She received her M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University in 2019. Woods' dissertation research examines the intersection of choreography, public safety and the police state. She is interested in investigating "performances of protection" and their relationship to national identity and panic, as well as the ways in which the body can rehearse for crisis and perpetuate threat.
