Brianna Alexis Heath is a first-year Ph.D. in Theatre candidate with a specialization in performance as public practice at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds a B.A. in Dance & Cultural Studies from Columbia College Chicago, where she was awarded the 2017 Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Outstanding B.A. Thesis. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Heath is a womanist, interdisciplinary performance artist, writer and cultural curator with a background in arts criticism, curation and community-based arts organizing. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she served as Executive Director and co-founder of Duniate Culture Foundation, an arts and culture organization in Kaduna, Nigeria, and helped establish the Art Resource Center, Kaduna, a creative hub for emerging artists and creative entrepreneurs. Her writing has been published in touching:blackstudy, a zine from the becoming undisciplined collective at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has worked as a dance critic for See Chicago Dance, and is a member of the Chicago-based performance collective Take Some Leave Some. Heath’s academic and creative work explores Black feminist performance, womanist spirituality and sacred praxis as forms of worldmaking.
