THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN
DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE
PRESENTS

FALL FOR DANCE

NOVEMBER 10-21, 2021
AT THE OSCAR G. BROCKETT THEATRE

Under the producing artistic direction of Erica Gionfriddo and co-artistic direction of Leah Cox and Joel Valentín-Martínez, Dance Repertory Theatre returns to the stage in Fall For Dance, a concert celebrating togetherness and connection and presenting poignant new works of choreography. Fall For Dance will feature two unique versions of programming, one for each week of performance, that seek to challenge and expand our understanding of the power of dance to change and transform, as well as an exploration of our collective transition through the COVID-19 pandemic and how we can take lessons to the other side of this ongoing metamorphosis.

“This year’s Fall For Dance will feature two unique weeks of programming that look at themes of tension and contradiction,” shares producing artistic director Erica Gionfriddo (ARCOS Dance; Department of Theatre and Dance faculty member). “There is a sense of recognizing the preciousness and tenuousness of our physical condition, of navigating our changed bodies after a year and a half of limited movement, of interrogating our values and wanting our work to reflect those values. Dance Repertory Theatre has rallied around our community to safely bring this programming to the stage with live, in-person audiences. The joy and labor of dance is a powerful tool that reminds us of our profound connection to one another.”

Highlights of Fall For Dance include Joel Valentín-Martínez’s Cositas, an homage to the city of Los Angeles. This work is dedicated to mi gente of El Paso de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Porciúncula, originally staged in 2011 (revised in 2019) at the Centro Morelense de las Artes in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Also on stage, guest artist Jesse Zaritt (jessezaritt.com) presents Contronymic Living, an experimental project insists on the transformative power of dance, examining how the labor of dance builds and dismantles worlds of feeling and relation, seeking as-yet-unnamed possibilities for social organization and change; and The Horizon and the Offing by dance faculty member Leah Cox, a piece offered as an homage to all those in the community known, loved and no longer with us on this side of the horizon. Fall For Dance will also feature the choreographic talents of Hanna Bailey, Celise Brown, Matthew James, Ciera Ray, Sarah Wales and Allison Hamauei.
