Professor Susan Mickey Wins Joseph Jefferson Award

This award marks yet another recognition of the extraordinary artistic achievement and national reputation of Susan Mickey.

Professor Susan E. Mickey received the 2011 Joseph Jefferson Award this week for her costume design for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s production of The Madness of George III.

“This award marks yet another recognition of the extraordinary artistic achievement and national reputation of Susan Mickey,” said Brant Pope, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “The Department of Theatre and Dance is honored to have this wonderful artist and teacher as a member of its faculty.”

The Madness of George III swept top honors at the Joseph Jefferson Awards this year, receiving Best Production of a Large Play, as well as awards for Director of a Play (Penny Metropulos), Actor in a Principal Role (Harry Groener) and Hair Design. Department of Theatre and Dance lecturer William Bloodgood served as scenic designer for the acclaimed production.

Mickey is currently designing the new musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. Written by novelist Stephen King and with original music written by rock musician John Mellencamp, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is scheduled to debut at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, in the spring of 2012.

Mickey joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 2004 and has over 25 years of professional experience as a costume designer. Her extensive credits include design for almost every major regional theater in the country. She designed for 15 seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and has been an associate artist with The Virginia Stage Company and The Alliance Theatre. She has designed over 50 productions at The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, working with many of the great directors, designers and playwrights of the American Stage.
