American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive

The University of Texas at Austin became a site for American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive program in 2001. The summer intensive program is a four-week session, taught by faculty from American Ballet Theatre and The University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance. The program is designed for intermediate/advanced dancers age 12–18.

Program Dates: July 3-28, 2017

Auditions

Auditions for the program take place during January and February in ABT's national audition tour. Auditions are open to all male and female students who have achieved intermediate or advanced levels of ballet training. Applicants for all Summer Intensives must be at least 11 years old by their audition date and no older than 22 on June 26, 2017. Applicants over age 18 will be considered for the New York and Collegiate Intensives only.

There will be an audition on The University of Texas at Austin campus on Saturday, January 14, 2017. The schedule is as follows:

First Class (Ages 11-14): 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Student Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

Second Class (Ages 15 and up): 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Student Registration begins at 11:00 a.m.

The UT campus audition will be held at the F. Loren Winship Drama Building, located at 300 E. 23rd Street, Austin, Texas 78712. Learn more about directions and parking for your campus visit.

Applicants must pay a $35.00 registration fee (check or money order payable to ABT or cash for in-person auditions only), submit one informal headshot (photo should be taken with a clear background, hair in bun), and a photograph showing first arabesque on pointe or demi-pointe in center (photo should be taken with a clear background, preferably in ballet studio, in a black leotard and tights) in order to register. Photographs will not be returned. Girls must wear full-length pink tights and black leotards with ballet slippers. Bring pointe shoes for the last 20 minutes of class. Boys must wear white t-shirts, full-length black tights and ballet slippers. Auditioning at any site will allow you to be considered for all Summer Intensive Programs and merit-based scholarships. Students may only audition once each year. Pre-registration is suggested but not required.

You have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choice of the workshop locations to attend for the summer: New York, Alabama, California or Texas. All of the audition and acceptance process is handled through the ABT's New York office, and they send out letters after the auditions to let you know if you've been selected to attend. 

Curriculum

The ABT Summer Intensive curriculum includes both upper-level technique classes and lecture courses on subjects critical to the development of a well-rounded dancer. Classes include ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux, variations, men's class, modern, jazz, musical theatre, character, choreography, meet the artist, pilates, yoga, injury prevention, dance history, music, nutrition and acting for dance/mime. 

2017 Tuition and Fees

The following pricing is for the 2017 Intensive at The University of Texas at Austin.

Tuition: $1600
Room and Board: $2250

Students may elect to attend the Intensive as a day student. The Day Student Fee is $600.
Day students are required to pack their own lunch or buy it in the cafeteria. The fee does not include the cost of meals.

Housing

For 2017, students can choose to live on campus and will be housed in Jester Center Dormitory alongside ABT/University of Texas mentors. Weekend activities and field trips are included. Students also have the option to choose to attend the Intensive as a day student. Day students are dropped off for classes on campus in the morning and are picked up at conclusion of the class day. Day students are required to pack their own lunch or buy it in the cafeteria and can only participate in weekend activities (Friday - Sunday).

Performances

For 2017, there are two public performances on July 28 at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in Hogg Auditorium. Dancers perform ABT's repertoire taught during the program. Tickets are $15 and $10 for children under 18 for each performance and may be purchased in advance or at the door.
