ABT Summer Intensive Residential Staff

The American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive is a four-week program geared toward talented young dancers ages 12-18. Residential staff (mentors and supervisors) live in the university dormitory and assist and accompany the dancers in each step of the program, making sure that their needs and concerns are met - and most importantly, helping them have a great time.

For the 2019 Summer Intensive, the Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking to hire 19 residential mentors and 2 supervisors. These staff members will provide a 24-hour chaperoned experience for the attendees of the Intensive.  Staff members receive room and board, the opportunity to attend dance classes with ABT faculty and a stipend.

Dates of Service

Program Dates: July 8–August 2, 2019
Residential Supervisor Dates of Service: July 1–August 4, 2019
Residential Mentor Dates of Service: July 3–August 3, 2019

Preferred Qualifications

We are seeking prospective residential staff who have experience in dance and/or theatre; however, it is not necessary. Other preferred qualities include knowledge or study in the fields of kinesiology, recreation and leisure management, education, and/or management. A candidate's experience working with young people, their enthusiasm and responsible character are the primary qualifications we will be looking for in our selection process.  

Applicants must be eligible to work in U.S. and will be subject to a background check.

Duties for Mentors and Supervisors

Residential Mentor duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend and assist with all program activities, including staff orientation and training, student check-in and orientation, auditions, classes, rehearsals, weekend and 
evening extracurricular activities, performances, and student departure.
  • Be on duty and live in-residence on the UT campus, day and night, during the dates of service.
  • Chaperone students to/from the dormitory and classes. Attend technique classes, 
lectures, and rehearsals with students on a regular basis, on time, and help the 
students, faculty, and staff as needs arise.
  • Escort injured or ill students to and from medical services.
  • Participate in a supervisory and authoritative role helping to ensure the safety and well-being of the students at all times.
  • Be responsible for, uphold and enforce all University of Texas at Austin and American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive rules and regulations as set forth in the guidelines for the summer program.

Residential Supervisor duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend and assist with all program activities, including staff orientation and training, student check-in and orientation, auditions, classes, rehearsals, weekend and 
evening extracurricular activities, performances, and student departure.
  • Provide pre-program assistance to the coordinator (scheduling, administrative support, strategic planning, program preparation.)
  • Be on duty and live in-residence on the UT campus, day and night, during the dates of service. Chaperone students to/from the dormitory and classes.
  • Serve as a supervisor for approximately 19 residential mentors. Act as a liaison between the mentors and coordinator.
  • Document and report incidents concerning students and mentors to coordinator (medical, behavior, etc).
  • Assist in coordination of activities with vendors and mentors.
  • Participate in a supervisory and authoritative role helping to ensure the safety and well-being of the students at all times.
  • Be responsible for, uphold and enforce all University of Texas at Austin and American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive rules and regulations as set forth in the guidelines for the summer program.
