Allison Lowery is the wig and makeup specialist for The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance. She has been teaching courses in wigs and makeup since 2005. She is the author of Historical Wig Styling: Volumes 1 and 2 (for which she was the runner up for the Hamilton Book Award) and the co-author of Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre and Film with Martha Ruskai.
Lowery received her undergraduate degree in theatre from the College of William and Mary in 1996 and received her master's degree in wig and makeup design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 1999. Among her many jobs, she was a wig maker for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the wig master for American Players Theatre and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and created wigs and makeup for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Sarasota Opera, the Atlanta Opera, Piedmont Opera Theatre and Glimmerglass Opera. Locally, Lowery has designed wigs for ZACH Theatre, TexArts, the Zilker Park summer musical, St. Edward's University, Texas State University and Austin Shakespeare. She is a member of USITT. She was the 2017 winner of the Texas Campaign for the Environment's Trash Makeover Fashion show. She is an avid freelance photographer, makeup artist and wardrobe stylist.
