The Department of Theatre and Dance Welcomes Scenic Designer Josafath Reynoso to Faculty

WELCOMES INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SCENIC DESIGNER
JOSAFATH REYNOSO
AS INCOMING FACULTY

This fall, the Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin welcomes incoming faculty member and award-winning scenic designer Josafath Reynoso who will serve as a professor of scenic design in the UT Live Design area. Reynoso has designed work both across the United States and around the world and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the field.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Josafath this fall as a member of our faculty,” shares department chair Robert Ramirez. “He is a dynamic and multi-talented educator who brings with him an exciting range of artistry and experience to share with our students.”

Born in Mexico, Josafath Reynoso holds a M.F.A. in Scenic Design from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a B.F.A. in Scenography from Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral (National School of Theatrical Arts) in Mexico. He is an award-winning designer, having received the gold medal for scenic design at the World Stage Design 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan for his production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He was also awarded the 2015 USITT Scenic Design Award, the 2014 SETC Scenic Design Award for Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape; the 2013 BroadwayWorld Award for Our Country’s Good, and the SETC Ready-for-Work Award for The Threepenny Opera.

“Throughout my career I have crossed paths with numerous graduates of UT Austin and they are usually some of the most invested, informed and inventive people in the room,” shares incoming faculty member Josafath Reynoso. “I’m excited to be a part of the team that helps prepare the next generation of groundbreaking designers. The department is one of the most innovative and renowned live performance design programs in the country and I appreciate that UT Austin is committed to the development of new works and bringing the voices of young artists to the forefront. The department also has one of the most diverse student bodies, representing a multiplicity of opinions and life experiences that cannot help but further enrich the theatre-making process.”

Designing productions across both the United States and Mexico, his work includes new productions for Virginia Stage Company, Lexington Children's Theatre, The Clarence Brown Theatre, Serenbe Playhouse in Atlanta, Warehouse Theatre in South Carolina, The Triad Stage in North Carolina, Step! Afrika, The Alice Jepson Theatre, Donald Bedell Performance Hall in Missouri, the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre, Teatro Salvador Novo, Foro Antonio Lopez Mancera, UNAM Facultad de Arquitectura and Teatro Esperanza Iris (Mexico). International credits include new productions for Teatro del Borde in Argentina, Escena 8 in Venezuela and KCDC in Israel.

Reynoso was selected as a keynote speaker for Stage|Set|Scenery in Berlin and invited to present at the International Biennale of Architecture in Buenos Aires for his design of Noche Arabe. He has represented the United States in Germany (Stage|Set|Scenery) and The Czech Republic (Prague Quadrennial 2019), as well as representing Mexico in Taiwan (WSD 2017), The Czech Republic (PQ07 Scenofest 2007) and Venezuela (Festival Baruta 2006).
